Got my "new" tires mounted. I've made a terrible mistake.

I took advantage of the beautiful day today to mount my “new” Goodyear Wrangler Authorities. They look fantastic. They are terrible. Just awful. Just backing out of the driveway, I new I’d made a horrible decision. They are rough riding, make the truck harder to turn, and above all they are fucking LOUD! I knew they were not the right choice, but I had no idea they’d be this bad. I don’t even want to drive the truck again, until I get some other tires.

I got them cheap enough, that I should be able to break even reselling them on Craigslist. I’m done trying to cheap out and find something used, I need new meats pronto. Any suggestions for good reasonably priced all season truck tires are welcome, size 245/70/17.

They are rough riding, make the truck harder to turn, and above all they are fucking LOUD!

That should have been obvious from the tread pattern.

Are those real Goodyears or Walmart Goodyears?

I’ve bought one set of tires my entire life. Ignorance is bliss for me. I’m sure I’ve driven on some real turds unknowingly

Very true. I just didn’t think it would be this bad. I allowed their looks and pretty good online reviews to overcome my common sense. I’ll get my money back out of them, just another thing to deal with.

if they ride that rough, they should at least have a harder rubber compound, and a decent number of plies. 5 or 6?

you should be able to get 4 or 5 YEARS out of them........ just turn up the radio

You really thought used tires would be a good idea? At least they’d be good for a nice burnout ;)

Used tires are really only for emergency use, like for a spare tire, or if you’re really poor and holding out until you get your tax refund to buy some real tires. Or perhaps if you failed inspection and need something quick and cheap to pass.

Also, the Wrangler Authority is a Walmart tire, a private label Walmart exclusive. Any Goodyear tire with Viva or Authority in its name is a Walmart-only tire. Note: Walmart does also carry regular name-brand tires that are the same as those sold everywhere, so those would be OK to buy. For example, it is OK to buy a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers at Walmart.

Any real name-brand tire would be better than what you have.

General Grabber STX
Hankook Dynapro ATM
General Grabber AT2
Nitto Terra Grappler
Goodyear Assurance CS Fuel Max
Nitto Dura Grappler

Pretty much, and the ones on the [coupe] have tons of tread left, so I bet good money that I won’t be buying another set for this one either.

No way. I only paid $340 for the tires, wheels and center caps. They are going back on the list of Craig as soon as their replacements are mounted on my old (identical) wheels.

Take a look at the Michelin LTX AT2, BFG Long Trail or Bridgestone Dueler Revo2.

They’re all pretty good mannered tires.

Also the Fallen Wildpeak AT on Crusty have done me really well.

No burnouts, they’re going back to Craigslist where they came from. I know they’re Walmart tires, and they have pretty good reviews too, but clearly those people have different expectations than I do.

Why do you say used should be for emergency only? I checked the date code, the tread depth, and inspected for any cuts. Punctures or plugs.

Anyways, I got them plenty cheap, I’ll get my money back out of them.

You can never be sure of the quality you get with used tires, and of course they come with no guarantees of any kind, which most new tires do have. You also don’t know how hard the previous owner drove them.

What tires did you have before, on your old wheels?

Kelly Signatures, and before that Firestone Destination LEs, and before that the original General Ameritracs. Honestly I haven’t been impressed by any of them. Firestones were great in dry and on wet, but absolutely worthless in snow.

Goodyear is a shit tire. They don’t even try anymore. Their profit comes from their cheapo walmart only tires. Why even try to compete with others when you’re making boat loads douglas tire or their goodyear viva series. They’re el junko.

Used tires are great, so much cheaper than new and almost as much life. You’ve got used tires the minute you drive away. Put a few more mile on them, and there’s literally no difference. Nothing wrong with paying 1/2 price for 3/4 tires.

So these were all just regular highway all-season tires, similar to car all-seasons and not like real off-road truck tires.

The Walmart tires are are private, cheaper version of the Duratrac, which is more of an off-road truck tire. So some of the tires I suggested earlier you will probably dislike almost as much as the Wranglers.

The General Grabber HTS is also worth consideration, if you were happy with the Ameritracs you had.

I wasn’t happy with the Ameritracs, but I’m reading up on the Grabber HTS. They just released a new version called the HTS 60. I’m considering those, because I was happy with the General Altimax RT43s I had on my old Malibu.

I’ve got Grabber AT2's on both the MJ and the Niva. On the MJ it was cause they were snow-rated AT’s, and I got a really great sale, 235/75/15's. On the Niva it was literally the only snow-rated AT that would fit, 205/75/15's are tiny and still bigger than the stock 195's. So far they’ve been pretty good for a cheap tire. They’re decent in the winter on snow/ice, not too bad on pavement, great in the wet, and don’t get completely chews to shit on gravel. Nice old-school look of the classic BFG AT’s too, but without the awful snow/wet performance. But both the MJ and especially the Niva are much lighter than your truck.

My work truck, 2016 Ram 1500, has the Wrangler SRA’s from the factory, and they’re the worst tires I’ve run. I got stuck once in 6" of snow, and they don’t have much traction on wet gravel either.

We’ve been putting the BFG KO2's on most of the trucks at work when they need new tires, and while some of the early ones really liked getting small rocks pushed through the treads on gravel, lately they’ve been better for that.

Back to tires, have you ever had a proper off road tire?

I had a set of TSL radials and it was pretty loud. I have forgotten it’s been so long. I now run (ran when parked) TSL Truxus which are much quieter in comparison.

TSL radials, this is about the best I could find when my jeep had them 10 years ago

Internet photo also

See about over inflating them by 5-10lbs, it'll at least make steering easier

I’m not sure how they hold up in snow, but if I were you I’d just get some BFG AT’s with a warranty and call it a day. I’ve always liked firestone tires on my grand Cherokee but I’ve driven it in serious snowy conditions probably 5 days out of 5 years of ownership.

I’ve got the BFGoodrich TA KO2 on my GMC. They are a bit noisier than stock, but super great in heavy wet snow and driving through my Brother-in-law’s farm. If you actually go offroad at all, I think the bit of noise if well worth it. Plus they look great compared to highway tread. :)

It’s what we put on the Commander and my dad runs them on his Silverado. Great tire, and affordable. No problem on the highway either by the way, not noticeably louder either.
